Ítem Long-term effect of combination of creatine monohydrate plus β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) on exercise-induced muscle damage and Anabolic/Catabolic hormones in elite male endurance athletes(MDPI AG, 2020-01-15) Fernández de Landa, Julen; Fernández Lázaro, Diego; Calleja González, Julio; Caballero García, Alberto; Córdova Martínez, Alfredo; León Guereño, Patxi; Mielgo Ayuso, JuanCreatine monohydrate (CrM) and β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB) are widely studied ergogenic aids. However, both supplements are usually studied in an isolated manner. The few studies that have investigated the effect of combining both supplements on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and hormone status have reported controversial results. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to determine the effect and degree of potentiation of 10 weeks of CrM plus HMB supplementation on EIMD and anabolic/catabolic hormones. This study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial where participants (n = 28) were randomized into four different groups: Placebo group (PLG; n = 7), CrM group (CrMG; 0.04 g/kg/day of CrM; n = 7), HMB group (HMBG; 3 g/day of HMB; n = 7), and CrM-HMB group (CrM-HMBG; 0.04 g/kg/day of CrM plus 3 g/day of HMB; n = 7). Before (baseline, T1) and after 10 weeks of supplementation (T2), blood samples were collected from all rowers. There were no significant differences in the EIMD markers (aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine kinase) among groups. However, we observed significant differences in CrM-HMBG with respect to PLG, CrMG, and HMBG on testosterone (p = 0.006; η2p = 0.454) and the testosterone/cortisol ratio (T/C; p = 0.032; η2p = 0.349). Moreover, we found a synergistic effect of combined supplementation on testosterone (CrM-HMBG = −63.85% vs. CrMG + HMBG = −37.89%) and T/C (CrM-HMBG = 680% vs. CrMG + HMBG = 57.68%) and an antagonistic effect on cortisol (CrM-HMBG = 131.55% vs. CrMG + HMBG = 389.99%). In summary, the combination of CrM plus HMB showed an increase in testosterone and T/C compared with the other groups after 10 weeks of supplementation. Moreover, this combination presented a synergistic effect on testosterone and T/C and an antagonistic effect on cortisol compared with the sum of individual or isolated supplementation.Ítem Assessment of tug of war pullers’ competition intensity and physiological response at the 2019 European Championship(Federación Española de Asociaciones de Docentes de Educación Física (FEADEF), 2022-04-01) Castañeda Babarro, Arkaitz; Gutiérrez Santamaría, Borja; Coca Núñez, Aitor; Calleja González, Julio; Cayero Alcorta, RuthTug of war (TOW) involves 2 teams of eight people, pulling against each other on a rope. The main goal of TOW is to pull the opposing team towards a centre line over a distance of 4 m. The measurement of physiological parameters is key to understanding the demands of an activity and to identifying its limiting performance factors. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the intensity and effort demands of TOW pullers during competition, as follows: Data were collected from 7 male pullers (Height: 175.14±4.85; Body Mass: 77.39±3.92; Age: 39.86±11.68; %Fat: 17.56±5.21; VO2max: 44.24±8.38) in the 560 kg category. The blood lactate concentrations (LAC) were assessed before and at the end of each pull, and the global rating of perceived exertion (RPE) at the end of the pulls. The following week, pullers performed a graded exercise test (GXT). Heart rate, LAC and RPE were assessed before, during and at the end of the GXT to calculate the individual anaerobic threshold. The mean blood lactate concentrations recorded at the end of the pulls (6±1.9 mmol/l) were 32% higher than the mean values recorded for the individual anaerobic threshold intensity (4.1±0.5 mmol/l). For their part, the mean RPE values of athletes after the pulls (6±1.5 mmol/l) were 21% lower than those obtained for intensity of the individual anaerobic threshold (7.6±0.8 mmol/l). The aim of this research is to qualitatively explore variations among adolescents' reactions to violence occurring at their homes by trying to identify specific patterns in how these adolescents reacted to the violence and how this is related to the length of time they have been exposed to the violence. Fifty-eight adolescents (26 boys and 32 girls, 13–18 years of age) recruited in their schools completed a self-report questionnaire including qualitative open questions regarding the beginning of the violence and their reactions to it. Adolescents often described having reacted to the violence by attempting to distance themselves from it, or by interfering to protect their mother. Only the adolescents who began witnessing family violence at a specific point in time, when something significant happened in their families or because of changes in society, expressed not wanting to think about it or described being impeded from interfering or protecting their mothers because they felt distressed. Among the adolescents who had experienced family violence for their entire life, they often described that they did nothing to prevent the violence or they avoided thinking about it.Ítem Is the third sector an extension of public administration?: reflections on the Gipuzkoan case(Bristol University Press, 2020-04-24) Arrieta, Felix; Izaguirre Choperena, Ainhoa; Zuñiga, MartínThe role of the third sector in the provision of welfare and its relationship with public administration have been gaining importance in political debates because of the difficulties that welfare states have in responding to emerging social needs. The 'Gipuzkoan model', based on a public-private collaboration between third sector organisations and the public administration in Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country in Spain, has been drawing attention over the past 40 years. However, there is a debate concerning the role that each actor should play in the implementation of welfare policies. This article analyses, from a qualitative point of view, the role of the third sector in designing and providing public policy tools for the region within the context promoted by the Gipuzkoan model of public-private collaboration. The results obtained illustrate a multifaceted scenario in which different visions converge around the same question: How should this collaboration be developed and what future awaits the third sector?Ítem Co-creation study protocol for developing a nurse-led intervention to deprescribe benzodiazepines and Z-Hypnotics in primary care aimed at empowering women(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2025-09-18) Cuesta Zigorraga, Amaia; Las Hayas Rodríguez, CarlotaBackground: Gender inequality in mental health is a persistent challenge that requires innovative solutions for its resolution. Interventions in primary care can be useful in narrowing the gap in the consumption of psychotropic drugs. Objective: This study proposes female empowerment as a non-medical alternative for facing women's daily lives, which are often pathologised, and aims to develop a group intervention in primary care that promotes female empowerment and reduces the use of benzodiazepines and Z-hypnotics (BDZ/ZH). Methods: Co-creation is presented as a novel methodology for developing health interventions. Participatory workshops will be organised involving women who use BDZ/ZH and health professionals, including family doctors, primary care pharmacists, and nurses. These workshops will collectively identify the needs of participants and contribute to the design of the intervention, which will be developed as a nurse-led initiative. Discussion: This methodology is essential for designing interventions that respond effectively to the particularities of women who use BDZ/ZH and is valuable in adapting to the actual clinical context of the health professionals involved in their care. Conclusion: Nurses' ongoing patient relationships, deep knowledge of individual life contexts, and expertise in health promotion and education make them especially suited to lead empowerment-based interventions. Patient or Public Contribution: This study protocol outlines a co-creation process involving patients and healthcare professionals from diverse fields of primary care—pharmacists, family physicians and nurses—to collaboratively design an intervention aimed at empowering women as a strategy for discontinuing benzodiazepines (BDZ) and hypnotics. The goal is to leverage both the lived experiences of patients and the clinical expertise of healthcare providers to develop a tailored, effective intervention. In the future implementation of the intervention, nurses are expected to take a leading role. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of face-to-face supervision (FFS) with those of telephone supervision (TS) during a community-based pulmonary rehabilitation programme to increase functional exercise capacity in people with COPD using minimal equipment. In addition, physical activity level, health-related quality of life, psychological status, exercise self-efficacy, number of exacerbations and adherence were analysed. Methods A single-blind randomized clinical trial was designed, allocating 80 patients from primary care setting 1:1 to FFS (n = 40) or TS (n = 40) rehabilitation programme. The intervention lasted 13 weeks and was composed of a structured education and exercise training. The variables evaluated were functional exercise capacity (6-minute walk distance [6MWD]), physical activity level (steps/day), health-related quality of life (COPD Assessment Test [CAT]), psychological status (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), exercise self-efficacy (Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale), number of exacerbations and adherence (Adherence to Treatment of Physiotherapy Scale). Results Eighty participants were included in this study. Compared with the TS group, the FFS group presented improvements in the 6MWD of 28.8 m (95%CI 12.3-45.3, p < 0.01) after the intervention, 19.15 m (95%CI 2.7-35.6, p < 0.05) at 6 months, and 28 m (95%CI 11.5-44.5, p < 0.01) at 12 months, as well as the CAT score (mean: -4.2, -3.1, and - 4.6 points) respectively. Compared with the TS group, the FFS group performed an increased number of steps/day at the end of the intervention and at 12 months and had a reduced anxiety level at the 6-month follow-up. No differences in depression level, exercise self-efficacy, number of exacerbations or adherence were observed. Conclusions Compared with TS, FFS was superior for improving functional exercise capacity, health-related quality of life and physical activity levels in the short and long term in individuals with COPD.Ítem Exploring motivations, benefits and barriers for women with disabilities in sport practices(Sciendo, 2025-05) Romero Da Cruz, Sheila; Madariaga Ortuzar, Aurora; Leizea Ortega, Xavier; Jauregizar, JuanThe aim of this study is to discover the physical and sporting reality of women with disabilities in the Basque Country (Spain), focusing on the benefits, barriers and motivations for practising sport. Although there are around 61,000 women with disabilities in the region, data about their participation in sport are scarce and lack disaggregated analysis, which hinders the development of inclusive policies. Through in-depth interviews with 10 women, we investigated their experiences in sport, their motivations, benefits and the barriers they face. The main motivations for engaging in sport included pleasure, socialisation, self-improvement and escape from stress. In terms of benefits, participants cited physical improvements, increased self-esteem and the strengthening of support networks. However, a number of barriers were also identified, including the masculinisation of sport, lack of accessible resources and personal limitations, such as low self-esteem. The study emphasises the importance of creating accessible environments and adapted programmes, as well as providing personalised attention to encourage the participation of women with disabilities. In conclusion, the full inclusion of this group in sport requires a transformation of the range of activities on offer and an approach that recognises and addresses their specific needs, thus promoting their empowerment and well-being in society.Ítem The adaptation to new audiences and digital narratives in theater: a case study in Campo de Gibraltar, Spain(Routledge, 2025-02-24) Quintana Álvarez, Álvaro José ; Moreno Cano, Antonia María; Gutiérrez Almazor, MirenThis research explores the six public theaters in the Campo de Gibraltar region, Cádiz. The objective is to analyze their technological adaptation to new publics and digital narratives. A mixed methodology was employed to gather quantitative and qualitative data, including two online surveys conducted between April 24 and May 10, 2023, with 257 participants from the public and 89 scenic professionals and six interviews with artistic directors and culture councilors. The study focuses on the theater’s materiality and the possibility of immateriality through digital technology. It reveals that the analyzed spaces are unequipped to meet the technical demands of artistic companies. Ninety percent of the shows are forced to reduce their technical requirements due to a lack of resources, and only 29% of productions offer multimedia content. This shortage of technical resources discourages the development of new digital narratives, hinders the theaters’ technical renewal, and impedes new policymaking around performing arts. Although municipal theaters continue to provide in-person experiences supported by primarily analog technology, a gradual interest toward new digital narratives is emerging. Exploring the state of playhouses and theatrical productions in Campo de Gibraltar illuminates the broader issue of the theater’s social role today.Ítem Compression and torsion testing for elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio characterization in silicone rubber samples with varying shape factors(Elsevier Ltd, 2025-05-15) Cortazar Noguerol, Julen; Cortés Martínez, Fernando; Agirre Olabide, Iker; Elejabarrieta Olabarri, María JesúsElastomeric materials, such as silicone rubber, are widely used in engineering applications due to their high deformability and viscoelastic properties. Under quasistatic regime and small deformations their behavior can be considered purely elastic and can be characterized by the elastic modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio, which are interrelated in isotropic materials. Although standard methodologies exist for determining these properties, experimental measurements are known to be affected by the geometry of the tested samples. The influence of sample geometry on compressive modulus measurements is well understood, however, its effect on shear modulus measurements is less explored. This study investigates how the dimensions of cylindrical samples influence the experimental determination of both the compressive and shear moduli and, consequently, Poisson's ratio. Compression and torsion tests are performed on silicone rubber samples of varying diameters and lengths using a dynamic mechanical analyzer and a rheometer respectively. The results confirm that both the compressive and shear moduli are affected by sample geometry, leading to unrealistic values of Poisson's ratio. To account for these effects, a correction model is proposed for shear modulus measurements, complementing existing corrections for compressive tests. The model successfully describes experimental trends and provides a more reliable estimation of Poisson's ratio, aligning with theoretical expectations for nearly incompressible elastomers. These findings emphasize the importance of considering geometric effects in compressive and torsion tests and provide a framework for improving the accuracy of mechanical characterization in elastomeric materials.Ítem Comparison of three classifiers in detection of obstruction of the lower urinary tract using recorded sounds of voiding(Elsevier Ltd, 2025-05-23) Jojoa Acosta, Mario Fernando; Bahillo, Alfonso; Arjona Aguilera, Laura; Lorenzo Toledo, Rubén Mateo; Canelón Castillo, ElbaThe aim of this research is to help health care professionals to automatically detect lower urinary tract disorders using sounds of voiding recorded at home. In total 93 patients were diagnosed as obstructed or non-obstructed in a hospital using traditional flow-metering technique. After they went to their houses to collect several micturition recordings (5–13 records per patient) by themselves using their Oppo smart watch. Our proposed method is based on the use of the wavelet scalogram to represent the collected sounds as images, which contains both time and frequency information. A deep learning model, the inception v3 convolutional neural network, is used to classify these recordings of the voiding into the categories of obstructed and non-obstructed. We compared the performance of our approach with classical techniques such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) using the envelope of the superposed sounds per patient as inputs. These recordings were obtained in home environments. The ground truth was built by physicians’ labeling these sound recording. They used the gold standard uroflowmetry test, which gave them all the information to classify the patients as either obstructed or non-obstructed. The performance of the model in terms of the F1 score, accuracy, and area under the curve were 0.897, 0.891 and 0.901, respectively.Ítem Women, politics, and communication: the discourses of antifeminism and misogyny in Europe(University of Southern California, 2024) Gutiérrez Almazor, MirenScholarship highlights the attempts to hinder the advances of equality in contemporary discourses via social platforms and political speech. The attempts to undermine feminism appear in speech and attitudes linked to communities where hegemonic masculinity is the norm, such as far-right parties, conservative elites, and others who wish to maintain their privileges. Parallel to antifeminism is the increased online misogyny against women. The articles in this Special Section analyze how antifeminism and misogyny appear in attitudes, are disseminated in political discourses, or function to increase polarization. Salient patterns that emerge in this discourse are 1) the idea that women in democracies have achieved equality, therefore, it is redundant to empower them; 2) the crucial role social platforms play in spreading antifeminism and misogyny to neutralize women; 3) the coincidence of the gender backlash with the political polarization and revival of old debates about the convenience of gender equality; and 4) the gaps in institutional awareness due to a disregard for gender and women’s perspectives.Ítem Data and documentaries: methodological hybridizations in activism(Intellect, 2020-10-01) Gutiérrez Almazor, MirenHybridization permeates all fields of communication: documentaries are no exception. One example is The Left-to-Die Boat by Forensic Architecture (FA), an audio-visual account of how 63 refugees lost their lives in 2011 when their ship was adrift in the waters of Libya. The Left-to-Die Boat combines documentary techniques with data analysis and visualizations to expose a tragedy, change migration policies and sustain court cases. Based on critical data and documentary studies, this article inspects the methodological hybridization proposed by FA in six documentaries. The questions are: how does FA hybridize? What are the outcomes of this hybridization? What is hybridization today? The analysis links these documentaries’ characteristics with functions and outcomes, offering a taxonomy that can be employed beyond this study. The findings indicate that activism is taking multidimensional forms, blurring the boundaries separating documentaries, data science and art in search of impact.Ítem Antiphishing model based on similarity index and neural networks(Blue Eyes Intelligence Engineering and Sciences Publication, 2019-10-30) Sharma, Bhawna; Singh, Parvinder; Kaur, Jasvinder; Bringas García, PabloPhishing is a negative technique that is used to steel private and confidential information over the web. In the present work author proposed a hybrid similarity of Cosine and Soft Cosine to calculate the similarity between the user query and repository as an anti-phishing approach. The proposed work model uses a multiclass learning method called Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Network. The model evaluation results with 100 to 3000 test files shows that the hybrid model is able to detect the phishing attack with an average precision of 71% and is highly effective.Ítem Participation in a datafied environment: questions about data literacy(University of Minho, Communication and Society Research Centre, 2019-12-20) Gutiérrez Almazor, MirenIn politics, participation can be understood as citizen involvement in decision making, including mechanisms for people to intervene in political and social choices, among other areas of action. Those mechanisms are crucial since democracy hinges on civic participation in political life. However, in the big data era, participation is not possible without people's access to and control of data; that is, civil rights become digital rights. This article deals with data literacy as a filter for participation in a datafied environment and the role of ordinary people in data processes. Because participation in a datafied world depends of people's ability to enter the fray, questions about where lines can be drawn to separate experts from non-experts (i.e. ordinary citizens) and whether intervention in the data infrastructure requires a degree of data literacy for effective participation constitute a relevant discussion for the practice and theory of activism as a form of political or civic engagement. Political engagement is understood here as coordinated action aimed at problem-solving, campaigning and assisting others. Namely, to rescue political participation in a datafied domain, a degree of skill is necessary. Drawing from a taxonomy of data mining involvement (Kennedy, 2016) and empirical cases of crisis mapping (Gutierrez, 2018a; 2018b), this theoretical article offers conceptualisations to think about what participation entails today.Ítem Making dispersed data a visual event(Frontiers Media S.A., 2023-02-02) Gutiérrez Almazor, MirenÍtem Basque adjectival participles: stative, resultative or experiential(Ubiquity Press, 2019) Berro Urrizelki, AneIn this paper, I analyze the form and meaning of adjectival participles in Basque, an ergative language with a predominant use of analytic verbal forms. I show that even though adjectival participles have similar morphological makeup, they can be the exponents of different aspectual configurations, with different interpretation and syntactic distribution. As attested for other languages such as English and Greek, Basque adjectival participles can be interpreted as stative or resultative (Embick 2004), and also as target state participles or resultant state participles (Kratzer 2000; Anagnostopoulou 2003). As noted in the literature (Anagnostopoulou 2003; Alexiadou & Anagnostopoulou 2008; Alexiadou et al. 2014; Alexiadou et al. 2015), these types are subject to different syntactic distribution, particularly regarding the acceptability of different sorts of event-related and subject-oriented modifiers. In this paper, I propose that a further aspectual class must be included into the typology of adjectival participles: experientials. In fact, adjectival participles in Basque can be interpreted experientially under certain conditions. The five-way typology of participles emerges as the result of the combination of two different aspectual heads (a stativizing Asp head, as in Kratzer 2000 and Embick 2004, and an aspectual operator with anteriority semantics, as in Kratzer 2000; Alexiadou et al. 2014; Alexiadou et al. 2015) with complements of different sizes and nature. In particular, the experiential reading arises when the Asp head of anteriority combines with particular vP semantics and/or with a particular linking relation between the subject of predication and the arguments within VoiceP.Ítem How can responsible family ownership be sustained across generations?: a family social capital approach(Springer Netherlands, 2019-09) Aragón Amonarriz, Cristina ; Arredondo Corrales, Agustín Mateo ; Iturrioz Landart, CristinaResponsible family ownership (RFO) is a combination of the family’s commitment to the family-firm’s (FF’s) stakeholders in the long term and the explicit behaviour of the family members associated with the firm. However, families are not individuals but rather a system of relationships among family members. In such a context, misunderstandings in communication, anachronistic mentalities and different value systems can block the intergenerational transmission of RFO. Consequently, the responsibility of the family towards the FF’s stakeholders may be damaged and the firm’s socially responsible behaviour hindered. This paper aims to identify how RFO is transferred across generations and to ascertain the role that family social capital (FSC) plays in preserving the transmission of RFO from generation to generation. Our research is based on three in-depth case studies of Mexican family-owned small- and medium-sized enterprises. First, the paper identifies and contrasts a set of FSC-specific factors and problems which play a relevant role in the transmission of RFO while recognizing the influence of the mutually reinforcing dynamics of FSC dimensions. Secondly, the family’s honourableness (Aβländer in J Bus Ethics 116(4):751–767, 2013) is identified as a key driver for sustaining the transmission of RFO. Finally, the paper identifies RFO institutionalization required to face the intrinsic problems of transmitting RFO in growing families.Ítem New feminist studies in audiovisual industries: feminism, gender, ageism, and new masculinities in audiovisual content: introduction(University of Southern California, 2021-01-06) Gutiérrez Almazor, Miren; Pando Canteli, María Jesús ; Rodríguez Pérez, María PilarThis Special Section offers an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to studying the new ways in which audiovisual content and advertising communicate gender identities today. This unique section focuses on advertising (i.e., femvertising and menvertising), television series, animation films, and social media platform content (e.g., GIFs) to look at crosscutting issues such as feminism, gender, ageism, and new masculinities. It combines multiple theoretical approaches from feminist studies, discourse analysis, framing theories, algorithm studies, and hegemonic masculinities, among others, to analyze texts, images, discourses, and communicative experiences.
