Ítem Cultural institutions as a combat sport: reflections on the European Roma Institute(Universidad de Jaén, 2016-12-20) Magazzini, TinaThis article aims at problematizing the relation between identity recognition, economic redistribution, and political representation in the debate around Roma inclusion in contemporary Europe. Given that culture has increasingly become politicized, by analyzing the emergence of the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture I reflect on the political and economic potential and drawbacks that cultural identity holds in a European society in which capitalism has turned into a cultural trait.Ítem PNV y Convergència nunca fueron iguales una historia inacabada del uso estratégico del debate territorial(Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona = Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Institut de Ciències Polítiques i Socials, 2016-07) Gómez Fortes, Braulio ; Cabeza Pérez, LauraÍtem Kinect-based virtual game for the elderly that detects incorrect body postures in real time(MDPI AG, 2016-05-16) Saenz De Urturi Breton, Zelai ; García-Zapirain, BegoñaPoor posture can result in loss of physical function, which is necessary to preserving independence in later life. Its decline is often the determining factor for loss of independence in the elderly. To avoid this, a system to correct poor posture in the elderly, designed for Kinect-based indoor applications, is proposed in this paper. Due to the importance of maintaining a healthy life style in senior citizens, the system has been integrated into a game which focuses on their physical stimulation. The game encourages users to perform physical activities while the posture correction system helps them to adopt proper posture. The system captures limb node data received from the Kinect sensor in order to detect posture variations in real time. The DTW algorithm compares the original posture with the current one to detect any deviation from the original correct position. The system was tested and achieved a successful detection percentage of 95.20%. Experimental tests performed in a nursing home with different users show the effectiveness of the proposed solution.Ítem A robot-based tool for physical and cognitive rehabilitation of elderly people using biofeedback(MDPI, 2016-11-24) Lopez Samaniego, Leire; García-Zapirain, BegoñaThis publication presents a complete description of a technological solution system for the physical and cognitive rehabilitation of elderly people through a biofeedback system, which is combined with a Lego robot. The technology used was the iOS’s (iPhone Operating System) Objective-C programming language and its XCode programming environment; and SQLite in order to create the database. The biofeedback system is implemented by the use of two biosensors which are, in fact, a Microsoft band 2 in order to register the user’s heart rate and a MYO sensor to detect the user’s arm movement. Finally, the system was tested with seven elderly people from La Santa y Real Casa de la Misericordia nursing home in Bilbao. The statistical assessment has shown that the users are satisfied with the usability of the system, with a mean score of 79.29 on the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire.Ítem Risky online behaviors among adolescents: longitudinal relations among problematic Internet use, cyberbullying perpetration, and meeting strangers online(Akademiai Kiado Rt., 2016-03-01) Gámez Guadix, Manuel ; Borrajo, Erika; Almendros, CarmenBackground and aims: This study aims to analyze the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationship between three major risky online behaviors during adolescence: problematic Internet use, cyberbullying perpetration, and meeting strangers online. An additional objective was to study the role of impulsivity-irresponsibility as a possible explanatory variable of the relationships between these risky online behaviors. Methods: The study sample was 888 adolescents that completed self-report measures at time 1 and time 2 with an interval of 6 months. Results: The findings showed a significant cross-sectional relationship between the risky online behaviors analyzed. At the longitudinal level, problematic Internet use at time 1 predicted an increase in the perpetration of cyberbullying and meeting strangers online at time 2. Furthermore, meeting strangers online increased the likelihood of cyberbullying perpetration at time 2. Finally, when impulsivity-irresponsibility was included in the model as an explanatory variable, the relationships previously found remained significant. Discussion: These results extend traditional problem behavior theory during adolescence, also supporting a relationship between different risky behaviors in cyberspace. In addition, findings highlighted the role of problematic Internet use, which increased the chances of developing cyberbullying perpetration and meeting strangers online over time. However, the results suggest a limited role of impulsivity-irresponsibility as an explicative mechanism. Conclusions: The findings suggest that various online risk activities ought to be addressed together when planning assessment, prevention and intervention efforts.Ítem J.M. Although the composition of gambling advertisement narratives has received some limited attention, nothing is known regarding how betting advertisements (often referred to as “adverts” or “commercials”) might be associating gambling with other potentially risky behaviors. The present paper examines the representation of alcohol drinking and low nutritional value food eating in sports betting advertising. By means of a mixed-methods approach to content analysis, a sample of British and Spanish soccer betting adverts was analyzed (N = 135). The results suggest that betting advertising aligns drinking alcohol with sports culture and significantly associates emotionally charged sporting situations such as watching live games or celebrating goals with alcohol. Additionally, alcohol drinking is more frequent in betting adverts with a higher number of characters, linking friendship bonding and alcohol drinking (especially beer) in the context of sports gambling.Ítem Betting is loving and bettors are predators: a conceptual metaphor approach to online sports betting advertising(Springer Science and Business Media, LLC, 2018-10-30) López González, Hibai; Guerrero Solé, Frederic; Estévez Gutiérrez, Ana; Griffiths, Mark D.The legalisation of online gambling in multiple territories has caused a growth in the exposure of consumers to online sports betting (OSB) advertising. While some efforts have been made to understand the visible structure of betting promotional messages, little is known about the latent components of OSB advertisements. The present study sought to address this issue by examining the metaphorical conceptualisation of OSB advertising. A sample of Spanish and British television OSB advertisements from 2014 to 2016 was analysed (N = 133). Following Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory, four main structural metaphors that shaped how OSB advertising can be understood were identified: betting as (1) an act of love, (2) a market, (3) a sport, and (4) a natural environment. In general, these metaphors, which were found widely across 29 different betting brands, facilitated the perception of bettors as active players, with an executive role in the sport events bet upon, and greater control over bet outcomes.Ítem Anxiety and depression in Chiari malformation(IMR Press Limited, 2018-11-15) Lázaro Pérez, Esther; García Martín, Maitane; Amayra Caro, Imanol; López Paz, Juan Francisco; Martínez, Óscar; Pérez Álvarez, Manuel; Berrocoso Cascallana, Sarah; Al-Rashaida, Mohammad Ali Hussein; Parada Fernández, Pamela; Rodríguez Bermejo, Alicia Aurora; Jometón, Amaia; Ruíz García, BegoñaThere are few studies that explore the involvement of the cerebellum in the affective area. This study aims to evaluate the affective component and, specifically, the emotional states of depression and anxiety associated with the Chiari malformation, controlling perceived pain. This study included a Chiari group and two control groups, one healthy, the other suffering from Myasthenia gravis, which exhibits a physical component without cerebellar impairment. Each participant completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale. Scores were significantly higher for the anxiety variable in the Chiari group, either when compared to the control group or the group affected by Myasthenia gravis-controlling the level of headache. The results obtained support previous studies in which the important contribution of the cerebellum to emotional regulation was emphasized.Ítem Demographically calibrated norms for two premorbid intelligence measures: the Word Accentuation Test and Pseudo-Words reading subtest(Frontiers Media S.A., 2018-10-11) Pino, Rocío del; Peña Lasa, Javier; Ibarretxe Bilbao, Naroa; Schretlen, David J.; Ojeda del Pozo, NataliaThe Word Accentuation Test (WAT, Spanish adaptation of the NART) and the Pseudo-Words (PW) Reading subtest from the Battery for Reading Processes Assessment-Revised (PROLEC-R) are measures to estimate premorbid IQ. This study aims to develop demographically calibrated norms for these premorbid measures in a representative sample of the adult Spanish population in terms of age, education, and sex. A sample of 700 healthy participants from 18 to 86 years old completed the WAT and the PW Reading subtest. The effect of age, years of formal education, and sex on WAT total score, PW total score, and time to complete the PW task (PW time) were analyzed. Percentiles and scalar scores were obtained for each raw score according to nine age ranges and individual education levels. The results indicated a significant effect of age and education on the premorbid performance assessed, with no significant effect of sex. Age and education explained from 1.9 to 33.2% of the variance in premorbid IQ variables. Older participants with fewer years of education obtained worse premorbid IQ estimates. This premorbid IQ estimation decline started in the 56-65 age range for WAT total score and PW time, whereas it started in the 71-75 age range for PW total score. This study reports the first demographic-calibrated norms for WAT and PW Reading subtest for Spanish-speaking population. Even though the influence of age and years of education on premorbid IQ measures was confirmed, the PW Reading subtest showed to be more resistant to decline in elderly population than the WAT.Ítem Recognition of pigment network pattern in dermoscopy images based on fuzzy classification of pixels(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2018-01) García Arroyo, José Luis; García-Zapirain, BegoñaOne of the most relevant dermoscopic patterns is the pigment network. An innovative method of pattern recognition is presented for its detection in dermoscopy images. It consists of two steps. In the first one, by means of a supervised machine learning process and after performing the extraction of different colour and texture features, a fuzzy classification of pixels into the three categories present in the pattern's definition (“net” “hole” and “other”) is carried out. This enables the three corresponding fuzzy sets to be created and, as a result, the three probability images that map them out are generated. In the second step, the pigment network pattern is characterised from a parameterisation process –derived from the system specification– and the subsequent extraction of different features calculated from the combinations of image masks extracted from the probability images, corresponding to the alpha-cuts obtained from the fuzzy sets. The method was tested on a database of 875 images –by far the largest used in the state of the art to detect pigment network– extracted from a public Atlas of Dermoscopy, obtaining AUC results of 0.912 and 88%% accuracy, with 90.71%% sensitivity and 83.44%% specificity. The main contribution of this method is the very design of the algorithm, highly innovative, which could also be used to deal with other pattern recognition problems of a similar nature. Other contributions are: 1. The good performance in discriminating between the pattern and the disturbing artefacts –which means that no prior preprocessing is required in this method– and between the pattern and other dermoscopic patterns; 2. It puts forward a new methodological approach for work of this kind, introducing the system specification as a required step prior to algorithm design and development, being this specification the basis for a required parameterisation –in the form of configurable parameters (with their value ranges) and set threshold values– of the algorithm and the subsequent conducting of the experiments.Ítem Activating technology for connected health in cancer: protocol for a research and training program(JMIR Publications Inc., 2018-01-24) Mountford, Nicola; Dorronzoro Zubiete, Enrique; Kessie, Threase; García-Zapirain, Begoña; Nuño Solinís, Roberto; Coyle, David; Munksgaard, Kristin B.; Fernández Luque, Luis; Rivera Romero, Octavio; Mora Fernández, Matilde; Valero Jiménez, Pedro; Daly, Ailish ; Whelan, Ruth; Caulfield, Brian M.As cancer survival rates increase, the challenge of ensuring that cancer survivors reclaim their quality of life (QoL) becomes more important. This paper outlines the research element of a research and training program that is designed to do just that. Bridging sectors, disciplines, and geographies, it brings together eight PhD projects and students from across Europe to identify the underlying barriers, test different technology-enabled rehabilitative approaches, propose a model to optimize the patient pathways, and examine the business models that might underpin a sustainable approach to cancer survivor reintegration using technology. The program, funded under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 722012, includes deep disciplinary PhD projects, intersectoral and international secondments, interdisciplinary plenary training schools, and virtual subject-specific education modules. The 8 students have now been recruited and are at the early stages of their projects. CATCH will provide a comprehensive training and research program by embracing all key elements—technical, social, and economic sciences—required to produce researchers and project outcomes that are capable of meeting existing and future needs in cancer rehabilitation.Ítem Definition of requirements for accessing multilingual information opinions(Springer New York LLC, 2018-04) Derkacz, Jan; Leszczuk, Mikolaj; Grega, Michał; Koźbiał, Arian; Jorge Hernández, Fernando; Méndez Zorrilla, Amaia; García-Zapirain, Begoña; Smaïli, KamelIn this paper, we will present a study concerning the understanding of the needs of people using Internet in order to access to multilingual information. In fact, in the framework of AMIS (Accessing Multilingual Information and opinionS), a Chist-Era project, we propose to develop a system which will help to understand the main idea of a video in a foreign language. In order to design a useful system, a survey allowing to specify the profile of potential users of AMIS has been conducted. The study concerned 170 people from different countries: Poland, Spain and France. The sample is composed of people of different ages and different culture and languages. The results, in terms of requirements, achieved from this study show differences depending on how often the people watch the news on TV or review them on the Internet, and on the age of the target group. These concrete results help us in several decisions concerning how to build a realistic architecture of AMIS.Ítem Dimensions for argument and variability in child protection decision-making(Routledge, 2018-05-02) Mosteiro Pascual, Amaia; Beloki, Usue; Sobremonte de Mendicuti, Emma; Rodríguez Berrio, ArantxaThe purpose of this article is to analyse the arguments presented by 181 professionals in the child protection system of the Basque Country (Spain) to justify their decisions regarding the implementation of measures related to family preservation or separation. The implementation of a case vignette demonstrated variability in professional decision-making, with 62% of professionals choosing family preservation and 38% opting for family separation. A series of argument categories which can be used by most professionals when making decisions are extracted from analysis of the content. However, in spite of using similar types of arguments, the professionals differed in the importance they attributed to such criteria and their interpretations. Differences in decision thresholds were directly related to professionals’ beliefs regarding the benefits of the interventions analysed. To reduce this variability, reflecting on these beliefs and analysing the effectiveness of interventions in child protection to incorporate evidence of professional judgement are recommended. The present study, on the one hand, identifies the argument categories used to justify decisions and, on the other, analyses the existing variability when interpreting these categories.Ítem Pathways to equitable and sustainable education through the inclusion of Roma students in learning mathematics(MDPI, 2018-06-27) Díez Palomar, Francisco Javier; Flecha Fernández de Sanmamed, Ainhoa; García Carrión, Rocío; Molina Roldán, SilviaEducation is a key feature in the development of an agenda for a sustainable world. Education usually is associated with developing a responsible and ethical citizenship, aware of the main challenges for a sustainable development. Mathematics used to play a role as gatekeeper to achieve good educational performance. This article explores six case studies of Roma developing successful learning stories in learning mathematics. We identify five main characteristics in their educational trajectories that may explain Roma students' success in the school. This article moves forward previous studies characterizing Roma cultural features of mathematics learning, reporting stereotypes towards Roma in school. We conclude that in order to promote educational inclusion, successful stories may inform effective educational programs that, ultimately, may lead towards a sustainable education, including students from the most disadvantaged groups, as in the case of the Roma people.Ítem Impact of the interactive learning environments in children's prosocial behavior(MDPI, 2018-06-22) Villardón Gallego, Lourdes; García Carrión, Rocío; Yáñez Marquina, Lara; Estévez Gutiérrez, AnaProsocial behavior consists of a set of behaviors that are beneficial to others in the form of sharing and helping. It includes aspects such as solidarity and friendship, and it fosters development and positive psychological functioning; it also improves classroom and school climate. Interactive learning environments may play a crucial role in creating affordances for students to develop prosocial behavior. This study analyzes the impact of two educational interventions based on egalitarian dialogue (Dialogic Literary Gathering and Interactive Groups) on prosocial behavior among fourth grade elementary students. A quasi-experimental design has been carried out, in which measurements have been taken before and after the intervention. Results show that students involved in the Dialogic Literary Gatherings increased significantly their level of prosocial behavior more than those in the control groups. However, no significant differences have been found between students in the experimental and control condition, when considering Interactive Groups. These results have important educational implications for creating conducive learning environments for the development of prosocial behavior.Ítem Public capital and the labor income share(MDPI, 2018-10-26) Bom, Pedro; Goti Elordi, AitorThe decline of the labor share of income over the last few decades has been documented for many developed economies. A declining labor share is associated with rising income inequality, which raises obvious economic and social concerns. Although several explanations for this fact have been provided in the literature, they usually rely on elastic substitution between private capital and labor, which is generally not supported by the empirical literature. We argue in this paper that the fall in the labor share is potentially associated with the decline in public investment ratios, which have also been observed in most developed economies in the last few decades. We use a calibrated small-scale macroeconomic model to show how a negative public investment shock can have a sizeable negative effect on the labor share. Two assumptions are key in this result: that public capital directly augments private capital in production and that the elasticity of substitution between private capital and labor is smaller than one. We argue that both assumptions are plausible in practice. Our results suggest that, to promote long-run sustainable and inclusive growth, governments should increase the fraction of output devoted to public investment.Ítem Development and application of an assessment complement for production system audits based on data quality, IT infrastructure, and sustainability(MDPI, 2018-12-08) Goti Elordi, Aitor; Calle, Alberto de la; Gil Larrea, María José; Errasti Opacua, Ander; Bom, Pedro; García Bringas, PabloSome companies improve their production performance using manufacturing or operations models. In the last decade these models have come to be known as "X" production systems (XPS), or company-specific production systems. XPS systems have been oriented mainly to implement lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles, but have shown little progress in terms of sustainability principles. The emergence of databases (DBs), big data, and business intelligence (BI) systems have enabled the creation of system panels to measure performance and manage business processes. These panels also allow assessment of the implementation of the principles, methods, and tools of the XPS. The effectiveness of these systems requires sufficient IT infrastructure and an acceptable quality of data, but the key performance indicator (KPI) panels of XPSs often lack consistent and acceptable data. In other cases, the IT infrastructure does not cover the needs of the personnel managing the operations, which limits the progress of XPSs. This paper documents the positive experience of one company in jointly auditing and improving data quality and IT infrastructure, which better aligned its XPS with sustainability objectives. It explores, using an empirical case study where the researchers were actively involved, the possibility of complementing the KPI panel system of XPS assessment systems with the principles of sustainability, data quality, and IT infrastructure. The paper describes the development and testing of an assessment tool based on those principles, and offers a number of results that may benefit similar small- and medium-sized companies (SMEs).Ítem Developing a coding scheme for analysing classroom dialogue across educational contexts(Elsevier Ltd, 2016-06) Hennessy, Sylvia; Rojas-Drummond, Sylvia Margarita; Higham, Rupert; Márquez, Ana María; Maine, Fiona ; Ríos, Rosa María; García Carrión, Rocío; Torreblanca, Omar; Barrera, María JoséThe research reported sought to develop a framework for systematically analysing classroom dialogue for application across a range of educational settings. The paper outlines the development and refinement of a coding scheme that attempts to represent and operationalise commonalities amongst some key theorists in the field concerning productive forms of educational dialogue. The team has tested it using video recordings from classroom settings in the UK and Mexico, across age phases, subject areas, and different interactional contexts including whole class, group and paired work. Our Scheme for Educational Dialogue Analysis (SEDA) is situated within a sociocultural paradigm, and draws on Hymes' Ethnography of Communication to highlight the importance of context. We examined how such a tool could be used in practice. We found that concentrating on the 'communicative act' to explore dialogue between participants was an appropriate level of granularity, while clustering the 33 resulting codes according to function of the acts helped to highlight dialogic sequences within lessons. We report on the application of the scheme in two different learning contexts and reflect on its fitness for purpose, including perceived limitations.
