Ítem Birthplace and birthdate effect during talent process in professional soccer academy players(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-06) Hernández Simal, Lander; Calleja González, Julio; Lorenzo Calvo, Alberto; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteThe main objective of this study was to detect, from among a set of innate, acquired, and contextual factors, those variables that are ascribed to players ultimately promoted to the professional team of a Spanish league club during the earlier selection and development phases. The data were presented in frequencies and correlations and by means of a classificatory cluster model. The variables used for the analyses included date of birth, birthplace density, player position, laterality, academy entry stage, international participation, and debutant status. These variables were related to the talent selection and promotion phases (i.e., academy entry stage and player debut). A dataset of information on 1411 players from the last 30 seasons of the Athletic Club de Bilbao (1993–2021) was used. Regarding the results, first, there was an over-representation of players with respect to their Q1 birth date and K5 density quintile in the selection phase; however, once players joined the academy, their chances of promotion (debut) fell for players in the Q4 birth date and K3 density quintiles. Second, there was a significant correlation between players’ debut and the stage of incorporation (p < 0.01; V = 0.46) and internationalisation (p < 0.01; V = 0.5). Finally, the birthplace density and laterality variables converged as classificatory features of the players.Ítem Birthplace effect in soccer: a systematic review(Termedia Publishing House Ltd., 2024) Hernández Simal, Lander; Calleja González, Julio; Lorenzo Calvo, Alberto; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteBirthplace is a contextual variable that influences the talent development process of soccer players. The main objective of this systematic review was to compile the scientific literature on the effect of birthplace in soccer. This is the first systematic review to investigate how this contextual factor relates to talent development in soccer. Using the PRISMA methodology, the analysis of the 14 articles that were part of the final review concluded with three main discursive themes: the place of birth and population size, composition of the birthplace and socio-demographic characteristics of the population, and the place of birth and the location of high performance sport centres. This review shows that there are several underlying elements for understanding the effect of the place of birth on the development of talent in soccer. The combination of population density and the level of facilities in the place where the player was born are key in the development of a soccer player. It is not only about the place as a space, but also about what that space means for the development of the player's soccer skills. The findings not only highlight the characteristics of the areas, in terms of density and equipment supply, identified as talent hotspots, but also provide an opportunity to critically reflect on current practices of talent identification and development in soccer.Ítem Canicross pilot programme: basic considerations for its implementation as an extracurricular sports activity(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-05) González Santamaría, Xabier; Borrajo, Erika; Sánchez Mencia, Eneko; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteCanicross is a sport that consists of running while being pulled by a dog in a natural environment. Due to the benefits to health and well-being that it brings to the people and dogs that practise it, this sport could be implemented as an animal-assisted intervention (AAI) in the educational field. Against this background, the present work describes a pilot experience carried out in an educational centre in the Basque Country for the implementation of canicross as an extracurricular sports activity. The main objective is to describe the educational potential of canicross as an extracurricular activity that fosters students’ values of respect for animals and physical activity (PA) in natural environments. The results of this innovative experience provide the first evidence of the valuable role of animal activities in this educational context, where current academic research is practically non-existent. In conclusion, we highlight the novelty of the proposal and the motivating effect that the dogs in this case had among the students in encouraging them to practise PA and adhere to values of respect and animal welfare.Ítem Deporte, ocio y smart city: un trinomio en desarrollo(Los Libros de la Catarata, 2024) Rubio Florido, Isabel; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, Maite; Lázaro Fernández, Yolanda; Leunda Goñi, Itsaso; Roa Mora, DanelÍtem Exploring Athletic Club de Bilbao's communication: philosophy, identity, and fan´s community(Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2024) Aurrekoetxea Casaus, Maite; Sánchez Mencia, Eneko; Hernández Simal, LanderProfessional football teams operate today in a globalized context where communication strategies are crucial for strengthening bonds with their fanbases. The aim of this research was to explore the communication tactics of a football team by analyzing 15 documentary videos from the official YouTube channel of Athletic Club de Bilbao, a football team with a recruitment policy that is unique in the world of football and often labelled as anachronistic. Through a qualitative methodology, thematic analysis, and using Atlas.ti software, the results revealed that the football club's communication tactics involve presenting a contemporary narrative in their documentary videos that embraces the linguistic and cultural diversity of Basque society, blending localism with cosmopolitanism. These findings suggest that the fans of Athletic Club experience a sense of distinction and exclusivity compared to other teams and supporters worldwide, transcending the geographical boundaries of their city.Ítem Exploring the psychosocial characteristics of women with gambling disorder through a qualitative study(Frontiers Media SA, 2023-12-20) Estévez Gutiérrez, Ana; Macía Guerrero, Laura ; Ontalvilla, Andrea; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteIntroduction: Gambling disorder is a behavioral addiction that has been primarily male, but in the last few years, the age of onset has been equated between the sexes. The profile of female gamblers could be different from that of men. Consequently, this study analyzes the testimonies of women with gambling disorder to determine their specific characteristics (gambling motives, gambling preferences, and associated pathologies). Method: The sample comprises 18 women with gambling disorder aged between 30 and 68. Three discussion groups were held, and a “blind” inductive process was carried out to extract categories. The Atlas.Ti 22.0 program was used to recode and analyze the data. Results: Results show that women may start gambling due to abuse suffered in childhood, and often family members initiate women into gambling. Likewise, the onset of gambling could be a maladaptive way to manage negative emotions. Also highlighted is the predominance of feelings of social stigmatization, which can be reflected in women’s choice of games where they are not visible. Comorbidity with other disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and the use of other substances are noteworthy. Discussion: The factors explaining why female gamblers do not seek treatment compared to male gamblers are analyzed. More studies on women’s experience with gambling are needed to address the specific characteristics of gambling disorder in women.Ítem The learning process to become a military leader: born, background and lifelong learning(Frontiers Media SA, 2023-08-08) Díez Ruiz, Fernando; Martínez Morán, Pedro César ; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteThis paper analyzes the leadership learning model used by Spanish military commanders from the lifelong learning methodology. The lifelong learning approach consists of three main perspectives: a personal and professional context and how to achieve self-motivation and remain over time; the formal and informal learning sources, and how all this occurs throughout the individual life. Leadership is a fundamental military trait and should be treated as an ongoing process. This study examines how influences the lifelong learning of the Spanish military leaders from the Army, Navy, and Air Force in their leadership style. The methodology resource used is an online Delphi technique through in-depth interviews as well as the Qualitative Data Analysis & Research Software Atlas.it. This research shows that from a lifelong learning perspective, military leadership is built continuously throughout life and is supported by more informal than formal learning systems. The key findings of this research show that the Spanish military commanders’ leadership comes from an informal approach based on the different opportunities given at the workspace, individual job performance, and family support. From the formal system, the career ladder is supported both at the military academy and following regular training. The results show that a lifelong learning framework prepares Spanish military commanders to manage the highly complex environment in which they are involved.Ítem March 8, 2019: a snapshot of new participants in the feminist mobilisation(Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona = Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Servicio de Publicaciones = Servei de Publicacions, Departament de Sociologia, 2025) Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteThis article explores a “new feminist subject” in the context of the mobilisation for Women’s Day (8 March 2019) in the city of Bilbao. Through a convergent quantitative–qualitative design methodology, issues relating to feminist identity and elements connected to neoliberalism that make up the feminist movement were addressed. The objective was to detect the new elements or nuances of neoliberal ideology that converge in the identity of the women who participated in the social protests and organisations linked to feminism. Among the participants in the M8 protests, the existence of new neoliberal indicators in women who call themselves feminists is verified. This article’s contribution is thus essential to understand the current establishment and explosion of feminist activism and the ideological overtones of new participants in feminist activism. Future research will shed light on the persistence or consolidation of this neoliberal drift in the feminist movement.Ítem Organisational and individual agency in workplace learning in the European metal sector(Palgrave Macmillan, 2023-03-24) Kirov, Vassil; Estévez Gutiérrez, Ana; Elexpuru Albizuri, Iciar; Díez Ruiz, Fernando ; Villardón Gallego, Lourdes; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteThis chapter compares the evolution of day-to-day, informal, workplace learning and work-based training arrangements in the metals sector in Bulgaria and Spain’s Basque region. The latter’s advanced, industrialised economic model is rather different from other Spanish regions. Basque country institutions successfully link vocational education with labour market needs; Bulgaria’s state educational system is poor at delivering skills. The Basque studies are both in the region’s important cooperative sector. The Bulgarian companies (both domestic subsidiaries of multinationals) developed in global value chains; they have recently introduced in-house training to cope with a shortage of qualified labour. Using qualitative methods, the chapter shows how organisational and individual agency provide space for informal workplace learning and what outcomes this has for early career workers.Ítem Place matters: a study on the influence of birthplace and the place of development on soccer academy players’ careers(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-04) Hernández Simal, Lander; Calleja González, Julio; Larruskain, Jon; Lorenzo Calvo, Alberto; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, MaiteThe effect of birthplace (the place where a player is born and grows up) is one of the key variables associated with soccer player development and achievement. However, recent studies have questioned the influence of contextual variables on selection and promotion processes related to birthplace. The main purposes of this study were: (1) establish whether there is a difference between the birthplace and sporting growth according to the stages of entry into the academy, (2) to evaluate the influence of geographical and contextual variables on sporting development, and (3) assess the chances of making a professional team debut. Applied logistic regression was used in order to analyse the birthplace and growth of 1411 male soccer players, of which 40.1% are incorporated in the U-12 category from a Spanish First division club, and the results showed a statistically significant association between a change from one’s birthplace to the place of sporting growth and later success (79%). Key contextual variables such as number of inhabitants, population density, proximity to sports facilities, average household income and presence of sports clubs have been considered. The analysis of the contextual variables revealed that there was a positive relationship between certain variables, like a higher population, and being selected for the academy (p < 0.01; r = 0.28). Finally, the findings showed that players who experienced a geographical transition were 38% more likely to make a professional debut. The importance of considering the place of sporting growth when analysing the “birthplace effect” has therefore been demonstratedÍtem Speaking up: how early career workers engage in fighting for better working conditions by joining youth-led social movement organisations(Palgrave Macmillan, 2023-03-24) Aurrekoetxea Casaus, Maite ; Bartolomé Peral, Edurne ; Hefler, Günter; Studená, Ivana; Wulz, JanineLearning from activism, usually informal and unrecognised, is an important component of industrial relations and a major learning source for individuals, organisations and society. Young workers who lack support from existing employee organisations may create their own. Based on studies of social movement organisations in highly diverse industrial relations systems (Austria, Spain’s Basque Region, Slovakia), this chapter presents a framework for analysing and comparing novel social movement organisations’ position within industrial relations systems. Each was founded because its national system did not adequately address challenges. Activism enables young people employed in workplaces unfavourable to learning, or unemployed, to compensate for what better workplaces offer. Youth-led social movement organisations generate important knowledge and practical skills, challenging established organisations, including trade unions, and renewing industrial relations structures.Ítem Virtual ethnography of female migrants: a WhatsApp group as a support tool during their migration process(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2024-06) Calvo, Adriana; Aurrekoetxea Casaus, Maite; Borrajo, ErikaThis research aimed to describe the use and functionality that migrant women provide to social networks and the role they play in the social integration of migrant women. Using a qualitative methodology design, a virtual ethnography approach, and with the support of ATLAS, this research analyses 863 discursive threads of a WhatsApp group comprised of 123 migrant women belonging to an association related to the social and labour integration of the migrant population. The results indicate that the WhatsApp group is a reliable source of information as well as spaces of solidarity and emotional support among women who experience similar situations during the migration process. The originality of these results is that they provide insight into the uses of social networks by migrant women, on which there is little research, through observations in a WhatsApp group.
