The steel industry, as an energy-intensive activity, has played an important role in the Spanish economy. However, foreign competition and the economic crisis have hit it considerably. Companies have sought new markets abroad and it seems they have been quite successful, despite the cost structure they face. Consequently, the future this activity in Spain will probably go hand in hand with product and process innovation. However, getting higher productivity and control of energy costs can be rather important.
