Resumen
La gestión de la diversidad de acuerdo a los valores democráticos encuentra un capítulo específico y relevante al afrontar la pluralidad religiosa. El reto de encontrar factores que aglutinen en un mismo proyecto social a comunidades con diferentes cosmovisiones adquiere en el caso del colectivo musulmán, características que parecen subrayar el potencial de conflicto que presenta su integración en las sociedades europeas. Una buena forma de testar si esa incompatibilidad es tal, puede ser la de comparar las dinámicas y necesidades de la población musulmana -en este caso, del País Vasco- con los principios que inspiran el rol de las religiones en los regímenes democráticos contemporáneos. Ese es el objetivo de las siguientes líneas, en las que los planteamientos teóricos acerca del lugar que ocupan los credos religiosos en las sociedades modernas, entran en diálogo con la vivencia cotidiana de una minoría religiosa que reclama su lugar en el espacio público.
Managing diversity according to democratic values is especially relevant in addressing religious plurality. The challenge of finding factors that bring together communities with different worldviews under a same social project presents a number of features, in the case of the Muslim community, that seem to underscore the potential for conflict that their integration into European societies has. A good way to test whether there is such inconsistency may be to compare the dynamics and needs of the Muslim population - in this case, in the Basque Country-with the principles underlying the role of religion in contemporary democratic regimes. This is the aim of this paper, where the theoretical approaches to the role played by religious beliefs in modern societies enter into dialogue with the daily life of a religious minority that claims its place in the public space.
