Resumen
El presente artículo pretende analizar la importancia y significación de los personajes extranjeros en las novelas de Fernán Caballero, tanto desde un punto de vista narrativo (su relevancia en cuanto personajes y como actantes en el desarrollo de la trama) como desde una perspectiva ideológica (su significación y su representatividad en el pensamiento tradicionalista de la escritora). Nos centraremos para ello en tres de las obras extensas de la autora: La Gaviota (1849), La familia de Alvareda (1849) y Clemencia (1852), e intentaremos mostrar cómo la aparición de personajes extranjeros en las novelas de la escritora, y su caracterización a partir de su origen, varía sustancialmente de unas obras a otras, cubriendo un amplio arco de posibilidades narrativas y estéticas.
This article aims at analyzing the importance and significance of foreign characters in Fernán Caballero’s novels, both from a narrative point of view (their relevance as characters and actors in the plot) and from an ideological perspective (their role and representativity in the traditionalist though of the writer). We will focus on three of the long works by the author: La Gaviota (1849), La familia de Alvareda (1849) and Clemencia (1852), and we will try to show how this inclusion of foreign characters, and their characterization by national origin, varies greatly from one work to another, covering a wide range of narrative and aesthetic possibilities.
