This paper focuses on the origins of the religious estate that existed in Biscay during the Early Modern Ages. The female branch of the conventual orders is exactly the group to study. The basis of this paper are original and some unpublished manuscripts that are located in conventual and public archives. Besides, a national and international bibliography has also been used. Thanks to all these tools, the paper will identify the various social groups of the oligarchy in Biscay, such as Medieval lineages, merchants or public notaries, who sent female members of their families to convents, and the reasons behind that decision.
