This article offers a reconstruction of the role of animals within Arthur Schopenhauer´s philosophical system. To that end, the author traces back the social and political roots of Schopenahuer´s interest for animals by placing it within the context of the tradition of German idealism which will, over time, led to the establishment of the National-Socialist version of ecological thinking. However, Schopenhauer´s philosophical treatment of animals, far from being reducible to its undoubtedly important affinities with National-Socialist ideology, draws clear connections to the ontological postulates of his philosophy. This article advances a philosophical reinterpretation of Schopenahuer´s positions in relation to animals that takes inspiration from the materialist ontological thought of Gustavo Bueno as well as a philosophically orientated historical reconstruction carried out in light of Bueno´s philosophy.en
