Ítem Participation in monitoring and evaluation for RRI: a review of procedural approaches developing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms(Routledge, 2023-08-30) Monsonís Payá, Irene ; Iñigo Alday, Edurne A. ; Blok, VincentThree arguments support the involvement of actors in the design and implementation of the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) for Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). First, it strengthens the evaluation; second, it allows taking advantage of the performative function; third, it is aligned with the concept of RRI. In Europe, the trend to institutionalize RRI triggered an interest in developing specific M&E methods and tools, but how actors participate in these processes is still being determined. This paper investigates the extent to which the participation of actors occurs or is expected to occur by using the three stages of translation proposed by Callon and colleagues–problematization, development of the research, and transfer to a real setting. Through a systematic review of 25 approaches developing M&E mechanisms, our findings show that participation occurs or is foreseen mainly in the later stages and is specially linked with learning and trust-related purposes.Ítem Reconceptualising responsible research and innovation from a Global South perspective(Routledge, 2021-07-28) Wakunuma, Kutoma; Castro, Fabio de; Jiya, Tilimbe; Iñigo Alday, Edurne A. ; Blok, Vincent ; Bryce, VincentThe concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) has been developed in the Global North with little reference to what RRI or RRI-like practices mean in the context of the Global South. We discuss the contextual factors driving the emergence of responsible innovation practice and ways in which they can inform efforts to develop an inclusive and global conceptualization of RRI. Findings show that some activities in the Global South are comparable to those of the Global North, although important differences exist in motivations and structures. We go beyond prior framings to propose a reconfigured, inclusive theoretical framework that accounts for trans-regional differences by looking at three cases to illustrate international differences and to demonstrate an RRI continuum. Netherlands represents a more Global North concept of RRI; Malawi a Global South RRI concept and Brazil sits between these two extremes and assimilates RRI concepts from both ends of the continuum.
