    Dative (first) complements in Basque
(Open Library of Humanities, 2012-06-29) Fernández Fernández, Beatriz; Ortiz de Urbina, Jon
This article examines dative complements of unergative verbs in Basque, i.e., dative arguments of morphologically “transitive” verbs, which, unlike ditransitives, do not co-occur with a canonical object complement. We will claim that such arguments fall under two different types, each of which involves a different type of non-structural licensing of the dative case. The presence of two different types of dative case in these constructions is correlated with the two different types of complement case alternations which many of these predicates exhibit, so that alternation patterns will provide us with clues to identify different sources for the dative marking. In particular, we will examine datives alternating with absolutives (i.e., with the regular object structural case in an ergative language) and datives alternating with postpositional phrases. We will first examine an approach to the former which relies on current proposals that identify a low applicative head as case licenser. Such approach, while accounting for the dative case, raises a number of issues with respect to the absolutive variant. As for datives alternating with postpositional phrases, we claim that they are lexically licensed by the lower verbal head V.

    Komunztadurarik gabeko datiboen gakoez
(Diputación Foral de Guipúzcoa = Gipuzkoako Foru Aldundia, 2009-04-16) Fernández Fernández, Beatriz; Ortiz de Urbina, Jon ; Landa Goyonaga, Josu
This paper analyzes some of the factors accounting for dative agreement drop in 19th and 20th century Lapurdian writers. Following Fernández & Landa (2009), a distinction is made between cases where dative agreement is apparently optional and cases where it is either obligatory or impossible. After describing obligatory agreement with experiencer and possessive/interest datives, section 3 addresses the situation found in complex structures. 3.1 examines dative causees, whose complex syntactic and thematic properties account for some of the observed instanced of agreement drop. On the other hand, in 3.2 we concentrate on datives thematically associated with the predicate in an intransitive copulative structure. Their failure to agree can result from the same agreement dropping factors examined before, but also from the absence of theta-transfer to the light predicate. In section 3.3 we turn to the transitive light predicate egin.

Subjektu ezabatuko inpertsonalak: euskara, katalana eta gaztelania, gai beraren gaineko bariazioak
(Diputación Foral de Guipúzcoa = Gipuzkoako Foru Aldundia, 2023) Fernández Fernández, Beatriz ; Berro Urrizelki, Ane; Pérez Saldanya, Manuel ; Ortiz de Urbina, Jon
Lan honetan subjektu ezabatuko inpertsonalak aztertu ditugu, alegia, subjektu in-plizitua eta zehaztugabea duten egiturak. Euskaraz zein katalanez, egitura horiek iragangaiztutzat hartu izan dira, aditz iragankorren kasuan argumentu bi gabe, bakarra ahoskatzen delako. Euska-raz, *edun aditz laguntzailearen ordez izan erabiltzen da, eta katalanaren kasuan ES klitikoa gai-neratzen da. Lan honetan erakusten dugu egitura hauetan subjektua sintaktikoki indarrean dagoela eta, hortaz, Blevinsen (2003) subjektu ezabatuko inpertsonaltzat hartu behar direla. Nolanahi ere, morfologiak bestela pentsatzera eramaten gaitu kasu batzuetan: katalanez zein gaztelaniaz, ES/SE-egituretako gai argumentuak subjektu baten modura jokatzen du batzuetan, aditz laguntzailearekin komunztadura egiten duelako eta klitikorik onartzen ez duelako.
