    Economic recession shake-out and entrepreneurship: evidence from Spain

    This article aims to gain a better understanding of the relationship between economic recession and entrepreneurship. The process of entrepreneurship, rather than the action itself, is a complex phenomenon, and such complexity surfaces when local context conditions worsen after an economic recession. This paper addresses the issue of how the likelihood of individuals to engage in the creation of new firms is affected by a recessionary climate. Furthermore, the study focuses on how the recession-driven shake-out effect varies across local contexts (i.e., sub-national regions). The case of Spain in the critical period of 2007–2010 is examined by using multilevel logistic mediation models on individual-level and sub-national region-level panel data. The results show that entrepreneurship shrinks during economic downturns, suggesting a pro-cyclical trend. A weaker perception by individuals of business opportunities resulting from the shake-out explains, to a large extent, the lower propensity to create firms during economic recession.

    Emprendedoras en el desarrollo de una empresa de base tecnológica el desafío del caso Dynakin

    En los últimos años, entender dónde y cómo las mujeres emprendedoras han logrado marcar diferencias ha sido de gran interés para académicos, empresarios y responsables de políticas públicas. Un ejemplo ha sido el emprendimiento académico donde las mujeres pueden crear nuevas empresas a partir de la exploración y explotación de oportunidades de negocio identificadas en el desarrollo de sus actividades de investigación. Particularmente, bajo la perspectiva de la teoría feminista, este caso de estudio trata de evidenciar las oportunidades y los desafíos a los que se enfrentan las mujeres emprendedoras al desarrollar una empresa de base tecnológica desde la universidad.

    Productividad de la innovación a través del emprendimiento corporativo

    En este estudio se analiza el efecto del emprendimiento corporativo en la productividad de la innovación obtenida por empresas de reciente creación. Los resultados revelan que aquellas nuevas empresas dotadas del apoyo de una empresa matriz, y que a su vez dispongan de una mayor capacidad de absorción de conocimiento y una definida orientación emprendedora hacia el mercado, rentabilizan mejor el esfuerzo realizado en innovación a través del lanzamiento de productos y servicios novedosos.

    Technology entrepreneurship research opportunities: insights from across Europe

    Over the last two decades, the phenomenon of technology entrepreneurship has attracted the interest of researchers and policy makers due to its significant impact upon economic progress. Several authors define technology entrepreneurship as the interface of two well-established, but related fields—entrepreneurship and technological innovation. In this vein, technological opportunities can be recognized and exploited by individuals through new venture creation yet equally can be pursued by individuals or groups within existing public or private organizations. This special section provides a more fine grained understanding of technology entrepreneurship by considering interactions across these individual and organizational levels. We present three studies, empirically grounded within the specific and distinct policy contexts of Spain, Italy and the UK, that reveal new insights on the determinants of technology entrepreneurship. In this introductory paper, we consider the themes and contributions of these papers and provide an agenda for further research outlining a greater use of multi-level approaches to further our understanding of technology entrepreneurship.
