Ítem Digital product-service innovation and sustainability: a multiple-case study in the capital goods industry(MDPI AG, 2021-06-03) Calle, Alberto de la ; Freije, Inmaculada; Oyarbide Zubillaga, AitorDigitalisation, servitisation, and sustainability are keywords for the current and future development of the manufacturing industry. However, their interaction in the context of an organisation and its supply chain is unclear. This study examines how digital product-service innovation (PSI) or digital servitisation affects sustainability, considering the triple bottom line perspective, as well as identifies the underlying causes. Moreover, this study analyses the role played by supply-chain strategic collaboration, both internal and external to the company, in digital PSI and sustainability. Using a multiple-case study methodology and B2B market perspective, four companies belonging to the capital goods industry were analysed. Our findings indicate that digitalisation is leveraging both basic and advanced services in their impact on economic and environmental sustainability dimensions, while the results are limited in social sustainability. In addition, supply-chain integration is relevant for digital PSI. Internal integration is required for both basic and advanced services, while external integration is especially important in advanced services. We conclude by emphasising that companies should acquire digital capabilities to develop defensive and offensive business strategies that ultimately affect sustainability.Ítem The FOODRUS index: assessing suitability for effective food loss and waste prevention management under an integral perspective(Elsevier Ltd, 2024-04) Amador Cervera, Manuel; Angarita Zapata, Juan S.; Calle, Alberto de la; Alonso Vicario, AinhoaThe impact of food loss and waste (FLW) generation on food supply chains' (FSC) sustainability represents a challenge embodied in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3. This problem requires a methodology to measure such an impact in a rigorous, holistic, and standardized way that can be applied to any FSC. This paper aims to develop and validate a single index to assess the readiness of FSCs to implement FLW prevention strategies and measure their impact: the so-called FOODRUS index. The co-creation methodology followed incorporates experts and FSC stakeholders feedback. The index has been validated in 3 FSCs: The Slovak pilot scored 74.35%, the Spanish pilot reached 68.79%, and the Danish pilot was rated 61.14%. Its calculation, eased by the FOODRUS index self-assessment tool (described in the Appendix), allows quick diagnosis of the FSC capability to implement FLW prevention strategies considering both the knowledge provided by experts and the experience of the FSC stakeholders that participated in its co-creation process. Collaboration within the supply chain appears to play a relevant role in the transition to service provision because of its relational character. Combining these elements in the same model, this study sheds light on the relationship between innovation capabilities and integration levels, both internally and externally with customers and suppliers, considering the level of servitization in different firms. Using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) on a sample of Basque manufacturing companies, this study reveals significant differences between manufacturing companies with low- and high-level services regarding the impact of customer integration on product innovation capability. The same result was not found for other supply chain dimensions—internal and supplier integration. These findings can be related to the prominent role of customer relationships and contacts in developing innovation capabilities in manufacturers’ services considered by some previous research. In addition, by analysing the different dimensions of supply chain integration separately, internal integration was found to be an enabler of external integration.Ítem Validation of real case solving (RCS) methodology as an efficient engineering learning tool(MDPI AG, 2020-12-19) Goti Elordi, Aitor; Akyazi, Tugçe; Calle, Alberto de la; Oyarbide Zubillaga, Aitor; Alberdi Celaya, ElisabeteIn recent times, new learning methodologies known as student-based methodologies have been introduced to simplify the learning process for the students and facilitate the acquisition of skills for them. Among them, problem based learning (PBL) and project-based learning (PjBL) are widely used methods in the world of education. Real case solving (RCS) is a variant of the PBL where students solve real cases through the application of the PBL methodology. RCS seems to be a relevant approach for educators, but it has an apparently limited implementation degree at the academic level. This article presents the successful implementation of four different RCS approaches in the lecturing process in five different classes in the engineering degree of University of Deusto. The initiative has been analyzed both quantitative and qualitatively; the overall performance and success rate of the students were compared with the ones acquired from conventional teaching methods. The results were found to be promising, demonstrating a significantly better performance than the traditional teaching methodologies. The successful results encouraged the university to continue working further in this direction.Ítem Value creation through demand and supply chains: evidences from Spanish companies(Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Centro de Estudios de Postgrado de Administración de Empresas, CEPADE, 2017-04) Calle, Alberto de la ; Grus, María Elena; Álvarez de los Mozos, EstherThe global context in which companies operate nowadays is extremely complex. This fact pushes organizations to a continuous search of the best strategy that will enable them to stand out in the market. Supply Chain Management, in its dual concept of coordinated demand and supply chains, represents an excellent opportunity to enhance the ompetitive advantage of companies. In relation to the demand chain, it can help to improve the knowledge of the customers and their needs, to develop their capacities for innovation and response, as well as to differentiate their products. With respect to the supply chain, it will focus the attention on increasing the flexibility in production capacity and delivery of products and services with less use of resources. For this reason, this study proposes to analyze the relationship between value creation and business results in some Spanish companies through supply chain processes. In order to do so, it describes a transactional non-experimental research employing the Technological Innovation Panel Database (PITEC)
