    Anthropometric profile and position-specific changes in segmental body composition of professional football players throughout a training period

    Body and anthropometric profiles of football players vary depending on the physiological and technical demands imposed by different positions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the body composition of professional soccer players in relation to their position on the field during a training macrocycle. The Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis method was used to analyze 58 players at six key moments of the macrocycle. The results show that body profiles are adjusted to the specific demands of each position. Midfielders showed the lowest muscle mass, while defenders showed many notable changes. In general, as the season progressed, all field players experienced an increase in trunk body fat. Fat and lean mass values of goalkeepers differed greatly from the rest. The greatest variations in body composition were observed during pre-season and transition in relation to variations in training load and competitive intensity. The results suggest that the phase of the macrocycle has a greater influence on these variations, although the physical characteristics of each position are relevant. Understanding these dynamics allows for the design of more personalized and efficient training programs to optimize the performance of footballers according to their roles and each stage of the season.

    Patterns of rapid weight loss and recovery of hydration/body composition in elite tug of war athletes

    Rapid weight loss prior to official weigh-ins is a widespread practice in weight-class sports, but its application in tug of war (TOW) has received little attention. Given that team categories are determined by total Body mass (BM), athletes often resort to acute weight manipulation to gain a competitive advantage. The aim of this study was to examine day-to-day changes in body weight, body composition, and hydration status in elite TOW athletes before and after official weigh-ins, and to explore potential sex differences. Ninety-five elite TOW athletes (41 included in the analyses; 19 women, 22 men) were assessed during the 2019 European Outdoor and the 2020 World Indoor TOW Championships. Measurements were performed on the weigh-in day (Day 1) and on the two subsequent competition days (Days 2 and 3). BM, body composition, and hydration status were assessed using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Repeated-measures ANOVA and regression analyses were applied to evaluate changes across days and associations between variables. Athletes showed significant increases in BM (∼3.9 kg/5.6 %), total body water (TBW), extracellular (ECW) and intracellular water, fat-free mass (FFM), and BMI between the weigh-in and competition days (all p < 0.001).However, changes in FFM should be interpreted with caution, as they are likely driven by hydration-related fluctuations rather than true alterations in lean tissue mass. The observed pattern suggests that elite TOW athletes likely undergo rapid pre-weigh-in weight reduction followed by aggressive rehydration and recovery. These patterns were similar between men and women, with trivial to small effect sizes across all variables. Findings highlight the need for safe and evidence-based weight management strategies to protect athlete health while maintaining performance.

    Physical activity maintenance in colorectal cancer survivors after an exercise intervention applying behaviour change techniques: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the long-term effect of combined physical activity (PA) and behaviour change techniques (BCT) interventions in PA maintenance of colorectal cancer survivors (CRCS) and identify the most frequent BCT implemented in them. Methods: PRISMA recommendations were followed. Databases were searched for randomized controlled trials up to October 2023. Studies in which CRCS completed a PA intervention based on any Theoretical Model of Behaviour Change (TMBC) and a subsequent follow-up period were included. Between-group differences at baseline and after follow-up were pooled for meta-analysis. BCT codification was performed using the BCT taxonomy v1. Methodological quality and evidence certainty were also assessed. Results: Five studies involving 906 CRCS met the inclusion criteria. PA interventions applying BCT showed a significant change with a small positive effect (pooled SMD = 0.22 (0.09, 0.35)) on the PA after a follow-up period between 3 and 12 months. Twenty-two different BCTs were identified (mean 17.2, range 15–19) of which 12 were common across all interventions. Conclusions: PA and BCT interventions have been found to be effective in improving the long-term maintenance of PA in CRCS. Further studies with higher methodological quality are needed to confirm these findings. Implications for Cancer Survivors: Aerobic exercise, pedometers, PA diaries and educational materials seem to be important aspects to achieve sustainable adherence to an active lifestyle over time. Supervision, access to fitness areas and applying some BCT appear to be differentiating features to obtain more successful PA maintenance.
