Gn 10 ofrece una tabla de naciones siguiendo la descendencia de los tres hijos de Noé: Sem, Cam y Jafet. Un debate crucial fue dilucidar de qué hijo de Noé procedían los indios del Nuevo Mundo. La cuestión no fue baladí, dado que Canaán, el hijo de Cam, fue maldecido por Noé y condenado a ser siervo de los siervos de sus hermanos a causa del comportamiento indecoroso de su padre (Gn 9,20-27). Este relato fue utilizado a partir de los siglos XVI y XVII para justificar la esclavitud y trata de negros, de modo especial en el ámbito anglosajón. Este artículo analiza cómo pudieron afectar a la consideración de los indios y negros algunas de las interpretaciones más relevantes de Gn 9,20-27 realizadas por los escritores españoles de Indias durante los siglos XVI y XVII.According to the Bible, all the human race comes from Noah (Gn 9:18-19). Gn 10 offers a table of nations following the offspring of the three sons of Noah: Shem, Ham and Japheth. A crucial debate was to explain from what son of Noah were coming the Indians of the New World. The question was not trivial, given that Canaan, the son of Ham, was cursed by Noah and condemned to be a servant of the servants of his brothers because of the unseemly behavior of his father (Gen 9:20-29). This story was used from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to justify the trade of black slaves, especially in the Anglo-Saxon sphere.
